The search comes back every summer, and it is easy to see why: cutting into a camper body or running a hose through a part-open window appeals to nobody. The honest answer is one word: no. An air conditioner that genuinely cools a closed space without venting hot air does not exist, and that is not a matter of technology but of physics.
What an air conditioner actually does
An air conditioner does not make cold. It takes heat from one side and rejects it on the other — it moves heat, it does not produce coolness. And it rejects more than it takes, because the compressor itself uses electricity that ends up entirely as heat.
The direct consequence: if both sides are in the same room, the balance is negative. The heat removed comes straight back, plus the motor's own. A single-unit air conditioner set down in a closed space with its hose unconnected heats that space. Slowly, but surely.
So what is sold under that name?
Two families of machine, very different from one another.
Evaporative air coolers. Water, a damp pad, a fan. Evaporation absorbs heat and the air comes out a few degrees cooler. The process works, on two conditions: dry air to start with, and a constant supply of fresh air. In a closed camper, humidity rises within an hour, the coolness disappears, and you are left with condensation on the windows and in the fabrics. That is exactly what you want to avoid in a small living space.
Roof-mounted air conditioners. These do cool properly — but they very much do vent the hot air: their hot side is outside, on the roof. They are not “no-exhaust” machines, they are machines whose exhaust is built into the installation. They need a hole cut in the roof, a bigger budget, and they do not move from one vehicle to another.
What works, with no building work
A portable single-unit machine with its hose, vented through an opening. It is less elegant than a promise, but it works, and it comes apart again. In practice the hose goes through a roof vent, a part-open window with a cut panel, or a locker door.
Three details change the result completely:
- The hose must be short and straight. Every bend and every extra metre heats the air inside the hose, which gives that heat back to the room instead of taking it out.
- The opening must be sealed. A window left open around the hose lets in as much hot air as the machine expels.
- Shade above all. No air conditioner makes up for a vehicle parked in full sun all afternoon. A blind, the right orientation, and the machine works half as hard.
And the question of power
This is where the real constraint of camper life lies. Most portable air conditioners run only on 230 V, which means a hook-up. The Zéphyr Noir + accepts 12 V, 24 V and 220 V: it runs off the vehicle battery or off a portable power station, without depending on a connection.
That leaves the consumption to count, and there you have to look at the power drawn, not the cooling capacity. A machine that produces 1,200 W of cooling draws about 420: it is that second figure that empties the battery. The runtime table on each station gives you the order of magnitude for your own case.
